Born as an Open Archive Initiative, the DOAJ is a comprehensive and valuable indexing service of more than 2,500 open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee their content.
The Directory of Open Access Journals is hosted and managed by Lund University Libraries, Sweden. Journals must perform a peer-review procedure or an editorial quality control to be included in the DOAJ directory
Various layer of information is provided: from metadata level to full text, usually provided in pdf format
A very large quantity of material is provided: over 2,500 journals are included in the directory. Currently 764 journals are also searchable by article for a total amount of over 126,000 records
The DOAJ tries to cover all subjects and languages. For social sciences around 700 journals are available
The website is often updated while each journal's issues have their own timeline. New titles are frequently added and posted in the "Added in the last 30 days" section
